Mount Sunflower, Kansas
Location: north of Weskan, Kansas
Summit elevation: 4,039 feet
Date: August 27, 2013
Mount Sunflower is the highest point in Kansas at an elevation of 4,039 feet. I stopped by the high point while driving from St. Louis to Colorado Springs. It is about an eleven mile drive on what was a well-maintained dirt road north of US route 40 west of Weskan and just east of the Colorado border.
A side road goes directly to the summit where there is a small memorial consisting of a sign, dead tree posts, a register, and sunflowers. The summit is slightly noticeably higher than the surrounding land, and the lack of trees allows for 360-degree views.
